Tobacco Walking Sticks
Growing tobacco on a farm was
a very hard life, but in eastern Kentucky at times it was the only source
of money for most poor families. Raising tobacco was nearly a year long
process. In the spring the tobacco seeds were sown in the tobacco beds.
Later, the young plants were transplanted to the fresh plowed fields.
After a full summer of work the tobacco was cut and hung in the barn using "Tobacco Sticks"
to cure. Later, in winter the tobacco leaves were removed
from the tobacco stalk and taken to market for sale.
The Tobacco Stick or walking cane shown below were
made over 100 years ago by splitting logs of Ask, Oak, or Hickory into smaller
and smaller sticks. The Tobacco Walking Sticks are about 42" tall, with
four flat sides.
